AI Companies in South Africa: Who Builds What, Grouped by Sector
AI companies in South Africa grouped by what they build: agriculture, manufacturing, African languages, legal, research and agencies. 14 firms, sourced.

AI companies in South Africa build a wide range of products, from fruit-yield forecasting and factory optimisation to speech recognition in isiZulu, WhatsApp research tools and legal research assistants. This guide lists 14 South African AI companies grouped by what they build, each described only from its own website as checked on 11 October 2026.
Search for "top AI companies" and you mostly find paid directories, or lists written by a company that puts itself first. This guide does not rank anyone. It tells you what each company says it builds, so you can shortlist by need. The publisher of this guide appears once, in the agencies section, with a disclosure.
In short
- The companies here cluster around local problems: agriculture, manufacturing, African languages, customer service and regulated industries.
- At least two build AI for African languages: Lelapa AI in Johannesburg and Botlhale AI in Cape Town.
- Several of these firms also list offices abroad, so check where the work is done if that matters to you.
- Product companies sell one specialised system. Agencies and consultancies build custom AI for other businesses.
- Inclusion is not an endorsement. Check any supplier yourself before you buy.
How were these AI companies chosen?
Three rules applied to every company:
- Its own website was fetched and read on 11 October 2026. Directories and press articles were used only to find names.
- The site describes the company as South African, or gives a South African head office, office address or company registration.
- The site describes AI or machine learning work. Companies whose sites describe "intelligent" products without mentioning AI were left out.
These rules exclude good companies whose websites do not say where they are based, and multinationals with South African branches. Treat this as a starting map, not a census.

How should you use this list when buying AI?
Start with what you need, not with the company.
- Product or custom build? If one of the specialised products above matches your problem, buying it is usually faster than commissioning something new. If your process is particular to your business, you need an agency or consultancy. Our guides on how to choose an AI agency and what AI consulting covers explain the difference.
- Check the company's own claims. Read its site, ask for South African client references you can phone and ask to see the system working on data like yours.
- Ask where your data goes. Several companies in this guide also operate abroad. If personal information will be processed outside South Africa, POPIA sets conditions. Our POPIA checklist for businesses using AI covers what to ask.
- Be clear on the type of AI. A forecasting model, a speech system and an AI agent that acts on your behalf need different skills to build and different checks to run.
One more point if you sell AI services yourself: it is worth knowing what AI assistants say when someone asks them to name AI companies in South Africa. CitedAI's explainer on how ChatGPT chooses which brands to recommend covers what shapes those answers.

- Is this a ranking of the best AI companies in South Africa?

- How can I check whether an AI company is really South African?
- Look on its own website for a South African head office address, company registration details and a privacy policy written for POPIA, then ask for South African client references you can phone. Directory listings are a useful starting point but are often out of date.
